Starcraft gets first Australian winner

The former Group 1-winning globetrotter Starcraft has had his first winner in Australia courtesy of Star Witness's5f debut at Moonee Valley.

Starcraft began his career in Australia and developed through handicaps to Group 1 class, taking the Chipping Norton Stakes over 1m and following up in 1m2f and 1m4f events in Australia also at the top level.

He went on to score a Group 1 success in New Zealand over 7f and was later transferred to Luca Cumani, for whom he won the Prix du Moulin and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. His final run was when finishing down the field in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

The nine-year-old son of Soviet Star stands at Arrowfields Studin New South Wales and commanded a fee of A$22,000 this year. He was on the Cheveley Park roster for one season in 2006 and his resulting crop - now two-year-olds - contained the Listed winner Don't Tell Mary.
