Bernardini: sired Saturday's impressive Count Fleet Stakes winner Alpha
Discreet Cat colt crowns successful day for Darley
THE Discreet Cat colt Out Of Bounds crowned an excellent Saturday afternoon in America for Darley homebreds when claiming the scalp of Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint winner Secret Circle in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita.
The colt's victory provided the highlight of a notable afternoon for his young sire, who was also represented by impressive Gulfstream allowance winner Discreet Dancer. The pair hail from the first crop of Discreet Cat, a Grade 1-winning son of Forestry who stands at Darley in Kentucky for $12,500.
Out Of Bounds is bred to be smart as a son of the 2001 Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine Unbridled Elaine, for whom John Ferguson paid $4.4 million at Keeneland in November 2004. In addition to Out Of Bounds, the daughter of Unbridled's Song is the dam of Grade 2winner Etched, a son of Forestry.
Unbridled Elaine is a half-sister to 1997 Grade 1 Ashland Stakes heroine Glitter Woman, the dam of Claiborne Farm's young Grade 1-winning resident stallion Political Force.
At Aqueduct, Godolphin colourbearer Alpha stamped himself as an exciting prospect with victory in the Count Fleet Stakes. One of 11 stakes winners by Bernardini, his victory came just a day after his sire was represented by easy UAE 1,000 Guineas trial winner Gamilati.
Alpha is out of the 1994 Lingfield Oaks Trial winner Munnaya and a half-brother to ten scorers including French Listed heroine Mystic Melody. Munnaya is a Nijinsky granddaughter of Canadian champion Kamar, also the ancestress of Fantastic Light, Turbulent Descent and Music Show.
The Busanda Stakes on the same Aqueduct card was captured by three-year-old Darley homebred Captivating Lass. The daughter of A P Indy is out of 2007 UAE 1,000 Guineas and Oaks heroine Folk, and bred on the same A P Indy - Quiet American cross at Bernardini.
