Dick Turpin retired to stand at National Stud

DICK Turpin, the recent Group 1 Premio Vittorio Di Capua winner, has been retired from racing and will stand at the National Stud in Newmarket next year.

The son of Arakan, who was trained by Richard Hannon, was purchased by the National Stud after his recent Group 1 victory in Italy. The National Stud will hold the majority share in the horse and the rest will be syndicated.

Dick Turpin is the National Stud's first purchase since their transfer to The Jockey Club in 2008. The stud's managing director, Brian O'Rourke, has always reiterated his ambition to take the stud forward and he is responsible for pushing through the latest stallion acquisition.

O'Rourke told the Racing Post yesterday: "The horse showed fantastic form from between the ages of two to four - he defeated Canford Cliffs in the Greenham Stakes.

"He was a fantastic racehorse, tough and versatile. He will offer a great opportunity to commercial breeders."
