DICK TURPIN (4 b c Arakan - Merrily by Sharrood)

Breeder: Rossenarra Stud in Ireland

DICK Turpin, a bargain €26,000 yearling purchase by Peter Doyle at the 2008 Tattersalls Ireland September Sale, made an impressive start to his four-year-old season at Sandown on Saturday with a commanding victory over Cityscape (by Selkirk) in the bet 365 Mile.

The Richard Hannon-trained four-year-old is the flagbearer of the first crop by Arakan, a  Group 3-winning son of Nureyev who stands at Ballyhane Stud in Ireland for €4,000.

A half-brother to three winners, he is the final foal out of the place Sharrood mare Merrily, a half-sister to Palace House Stakes winner Deep Finesse and to the dam of Cornwallis Stakes scorer Halmahera. It is a fast family with further members included high-class sprinters such as Monsieur Bond and River Falls.

Dick Turpin was bred by John McEnery of Rossenarra Stud, which sold the colt as a foal for €12,000 at the Goffs November Sale to pinhooker Noel McDonnell.

The achievements of the McEnery family was recognised earlier this year at the ITBA Awards when Martyn McEnery received the lifetime contribution award. His son John, who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the stud, told the Racing Post at the time: "It's nice to see that none of it has gone unnoticed. It's a hard, seven day a week job and we put a lot of effort into the foals and yearlings.

"The wet days are the worst, and then there was the week that Dick Turpin's dam and her half-sister both died. When that happened, I remembery saying ' I bet the Arakan colt will be a star'. But you've got to look forward and keep going."

KING'S GAMBIT (7 ch g Silvano - Lady Brompton by Al Mufti)

Breeder: Danika Stud in South Africa

THE Gordon Richards Stakes provided a cause for celebration for Maine Chance Farms in South Africa, which stands Silvano and Black Minnaloushe. The pair accounted for the first two home in King's Gambit and Black Spirit.

Former Group 1 winner King's Gambit hails from the first South African crop of German Horse of the Year Silvano, whose globetrotting exploits saw him land the Arlington Million and Audemar Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup. The son of Lomitas spent his early years at stud in Germany, during which time he sired German 1,000 Guineas winner Mi Emma, but was switched to South Africa in 2003.

Bred on the same Al Mufti cross as this year's Meydan Group 3 winner Bold Silvano, King's Gambit is out of the 1999 Group 1 Spring Fillies & Mares Challenge winner Lady Brompton.
