Relation to I Want Revenge highlight of select Barretts sale

THE US breeze up sales circus swings to Pomona in California today with the Barretts Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, which starts at 2pm local time.

With last season's Belmont Stakes runner-up Denis Of Cork and leading Japanese two-year-old filly Suni among its recent alumni, Barretts' flagship juvenile auction is firmly established among the leaders of its kind.

Last year's sale saw 73 horses sell for a total of $12,996,000, average of $178,027 and median of $110,000.But with a worldwide recession to contend with this year, Barretts will do well to match those figures, especially as those from the OBS February Sale and Fasig-Tipton Calder Sale dropped by double digits across the board.

In addition, this year's catalogue is 36 per cent smaller than last year's sale when 191 horses were entered. According to Barretts, the reduction is partly by design although the sale has not been helped by its tight position in between last week's Fasig-Tipton Calder Sale and the OBS Select March Sale, which will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thursday's under tack show on the dirt track produced several notably fast times led by a daughter of Distant View (67), who flew a furlong in 9.8secs. The chestnut filly out of Upgraded was a $55,000 purchase at the Keeneland September Sale by John Brocklebank of BC3 Thoroughbreds, who consigns the filly.

Several fancy pedigrees are also on offer headed by a Thunder Gulch half-brother to last weekend's runaway Grade 3 Gotham Stakes winner I Want Revenge (15) and a Giant's Causeway half-sister to dual Grade 1 winner Brother Derek (26), himself a $275,000 graduate of this sale in 2005.

Of European interest is a half-sister to last season's Group 2 Cherry Hinton Stakes second Art Princess (39), by Tapit, and a Dixie Union half-brother to Listed Feilden Stakes winner Playapart (53).
