Empire Maker's Royal Delta wins Alabama

ROYAL DELTA, third behind It’s Tricky and Plum Pretty in last month’s American Oaks, turned the tables on that pair with an impressive victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Alabama Stakes for three-year-old fillies over 1m2f at Saratoga.

The Bill Mott-trained charge raced handily and made smooth progress to lead the field at the top of the home stretch, before drawing clear and passing the post five and a half lengths in front of runner-up It’s Tricky, with Kentucky Oaks heroine Plum Pretty in fourth.

Royal Delta is a homebred for Palides Investments. She is by Empire Maker, a son of Unbridled who stood at his breeders’ Juddmonte Farms in Kentucky until his sale to the Japan Breeders’ Association last year, and is the second foal out of the triple Grade 3-winning mare Delta Princess.

Delta Princess is a daughter of A. P. Indy and Nassau Stakes (then Group 2) winner Lyphard’s Delta, making her a sister to Grade 1 Garden City Breeders’ Cup Handicap winner Indy Five Hundred (dam of last season’s Group 3 Superlative Stakes runner-up Ecliptic), and a three-parts sister to last year’s
Group1 Criterium International scorer Biondetti.

Royal Delta is Delta Princess’s second foal. The first, Love Delta, is a four-year-old colt trained in Britain by Mark Johnston to win five races.
