GENTILDONNA (f Deep Impact - Donna Blini by Bertolini)

Bred by Northern Racing Co Ltd in Japan

STAR Japanesestallion Deep Impact dominated the outcome of the Oka Sho (Japanese 1,000 Guineas) at Hanshin on Sunday when providing the first two home, Gentildonna and Verxina.

Although the winner Gentildonna was bred in Japan by Northern Racing, she also represents a triumph for European breeding in that she is out of Brian Meehan's 2005 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Donna Blini. In fact, she is one of two stakes winners produced out of the daughter of Bertolini already this year following her four-year-old sister Donau Blue, who won a Group 3 at Kyoto in January.

The pair are the first two foals out of Donna Blini, who was snapped up by Katsumi Yoshida for 500,000gns at the 2006 Tattersalls December Sale. She retired having won four races for Meehan, three of which, including the Cheveley Park and Cherry Hinton Stakes, were recorded during her juvenile season when she was the stand-out of Bertolini's first crop.

Donna Blini is a half-sister to seven winners including American Listed scorer Magical and out of Newmarket nursery winner Cal Norma's Lady, by Lyphard's Wish.

As for Deep Impact, Gentildonna is the champion's fourth Group 1 winner and second Oka Sho heroine following last year's scorer Marcellina - a remarkable achievement considering his first crop are four-year-olds.

Gentildonna is also one of six Pattern scorers by the son of Sunday Silence since the turn of the year. On two of those occasions, namely the Kisaragi Sho and Mainichi Hai, he supplied the first three home.

Deep Impact's success has not been confined to Japan either as in France he has been represented by Listed winner Barocci.

Deep Impact stands at the Shadai Stallion Station in Japan.
