Death of South
American sire Riyadian

RIYADIAN, winner of the 1996 Jockey Club Stakes for Paul Cole, died on Saturday from a heart attack at Haras El Centauro in Peru. The son of Polish Precedent, who was bred by Prince Fahd Salman's Newgate Stud Company out of Irish Oaks winner Knight's Baroness, was 19.

Riyadian was a successful sire in both Chile and Peru. Among his best performers was Cubillas, winner of the 2010 Group 1 Clasico Gran Premio Nacional Augusto B Leguia in Peru, and Comando Intimo, who was successful in the 2004 Group 1 Gran Premio Falabella in Chile. He was represented by his most recent stakes winner when El Jardin won a Listed race in Chile.

Riyadian finished out of the frame only twice in 15 starts for Paul Cole. Among his most notable victories was the Jockey Club Stakes and Cumberland Lodge Stakes, which he won by five lengths from Richard Of York. He was also second to Spectrum in the 1995 Champion Stakes with Bahri and Tamure in arrears, and ran seventh behind Lammtarra in the 1995 Derby.
