Death of Grand Lodge stallion Hotel Grand
GROUP 1 winner Hotel Grand, one of 12 Group 1 winners worldwide by the late Coolmore stallion Grand Lodge, has died atstud in Australia.
The nine-year-old Australian-bred stallion suffered a fatal attack of colic last week at his base, Racetree in Queensland.
Despite racing only as a three-year-old, Hotel Grand made a big impression, winning three races including the Group 1 AJC Spring Champion Stakes and Group 1 Canterbury Guineas.
He retired to Racetree in 2007 and with his oldest progeny just three year-olds, is the sire of 11 winners led by the stakes-placed filly Metonymy.
He stood the past season for A$13,200.
Out of the winning Star Watch mare Terrestial, Hotel Grand was a half-brother to the dual Group 1 winner Outback Prince (by Desert Prince).
