OWNER-breeders Jan and Peter Hopper appear to have a high-class sprinter on their hands in Deacon Blues, who became the 19th stakes winner for Compton Place when winning the Group 3 Shadwell Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.

The Hoppers bred the gelding in partnership with Mrs & Mrs K. W. Grundy out of dual winner Persario, a three-parts sister to the Group 1-placed Warningford. Deacon Blues is the first foal and so far only winner out of the mare, who has a yearling filly by Bahamian Bounty.

Deacon Blues is the latest smart performer out of this family to be handled by James Fanshawe; not only did he train Persario but also her sire, the Group 2-winning juvenile Bishop Of Cashel, multiple-winning brother Heretic and high-class three-parts brother, Warningford.

At the Curragh, Across The Rhine became the first European stakes winner by Cuvee when successful in the Group 3 Minstrel Stakes. Grade 1-winning two-year-old Cuvee spent six seasons at stud in Kentucky before his export to Turkey in January 2010. The son of Carson City is the sire of nine stakes winners led by Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity scorer Noble's Promise.
