Scenic Blasts in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes

Flemington: Coolmore Lightning Stakes (Group 1) 5f, turf
Scenic Blast (Scenic - Daughter's Charm)

SCENIC BLAST was an impressive winner of the Coolmore Lightning Stakes as the anticipated clash between Weekend Hussler and Apache Cat failed to live up to its billing.

The son of Scenic had previously been beaten by Weekend Hussler but reversed the form in style and so picked up his first Group 1 race in the process.

It was not the first Group 1success for his mare, Daughter's Charm, as she is also the dam of Gilded Venom (Golden Snake), winner of last year's Railway Stakes.

The pair were bred by Durham Lodge Thoroughbred Stud, who purchased Daughter's Charm for only A$12,000 at the 2003 Inglis June Winter Sale at Oaklands Junction.

The stud also stood Scenic and the 2008-09 season has been one of the best seasons for progeny by the late sire with the highlight being Melbourne Cup success by Viewed. Scenic is currently leading the Australian general sires' list by earnings, ahead of Redoute's Choice.

Weekend Hussler, a seven-time Group 1 winner who was attempting this sprint trip for the first time, was hindered as he mountedhis challenge and finished fourth, while Apache Cat, who had five top-level successes to his name including victory in this race last year, never got going and trailed in ninth of 11.
