Juvenile stardom written in Soraaya's pedigree

Breeder: the Keogh family in Ireland

THE Princess Margaret Stakes paid a huge compliment to this season's brilliant juvenile filly Memory when Soraaya, who finished second to her in the Cherry Hinton Stakes, outbattled Margot Did, runner-up to Memory in the Albany Stakes, to land the spoils.

Mick Channon-trained Soraaya passed the post half a length in front of runner-up Margot Did, with Perfect Tribute two lengths further back in third.

Looking at Soraaya's pedigree, it is no surprise to see her blossom into one of the season's best juvenile fillies.

Her sire, Elnadim, a winner of the July Cup who stands at Derrinstown Stud in County Kildare, has a strong record with his juvenile runners, having supplied stakes-winning two-year-olds Caldra, Elletelle, Elnawin and Wi Dud.

He had few juvenile runners last year, having covered only eight mares in 2006, but he covered 52 in 2007, the year of Soraaya's conception, and 58 the year after.

Soraaya's maternal family also pointed towards her being a classy juvenile. Her half-brother by Okawango, Declaration Of War, won the Woodcote Stakes and finished second in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at two.

She is also from the immediate family of Moyglare Stud Stakes third Timely (who produced Queen Mary Stakes heroine Shining Hour), Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Titian Time and champion Italian juvenile Le Vie Dei Colori.

Soraaya was purchased out of the consignment of Ballysax Manor Stud by Shadwell for 55,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October yearling sale.

Her dam, the Thorn Dance mare Date Mate, also has a yearling colt by Dark Angel and was covered by Jeremy last year.
