Scintillo (red cap): his dam won the French 1,000 Guineas

Scintillating Group 3 win for Fantastic Light colt

THE Richard Hannon-trained colt Scintillo held on by the narrowest of margins to deny Premio Loco in today's Group 3 Winter Derby at Lingfield.

The four-year-old son of Fantastic Light seems to have his career firmly back on track: it was not until last Wednesday's Listed Dragonfly Stakes at Kempton Park that he added to his winning tally for the first time since landing the Group 1 Gran Citerium  at two.

Scintillo was bred by Woodcote Stud out of Danseuse Du Soir, winner of the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and Prix de la Foret in 1991. Despite her top-class form, the Thatching mare was initially somewhat disappointing at stud, with none of her first eight foals to run gaining black type.

That might perhaps help explain why Scintillo cost Peter Doyle Bloodstock only 30,000gns at the2006 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

However, in recent years she has come to prominence with Scintillo and her 2003 foal by Barathea, the gelding Jumbajukiba, who has won seven races including three Group 3 events between 7f and 1m last year.

Since Scintillo, Danseuse Du Soir has produced only one foal, a two-year-old full-brother to Jumbajukiba.
