Alfred Nobelretired to stand at Coolmore

ALFRED NOBEL, winner of last season’s Phoenix Stakes, has been retired and will stand at Coolmore next season. A fee for the three-year-old son of Danehill Dancer will be announced within days.

A half share in the horse has been acquired by Ted Van Heemst, who will stand him during the southern hemisphere season at his Lynward Park Stud in Australia.

Sold by his breeder, Seamus Burns, for 220,000gns to John Magnier as a yearling, Alfred Nobel was regarded as precocious enough by Aidan O’Brien to make his debut in a 5f April Curragh maiden as a two-year-old. Second on that occasion, he went on to win three consecutive races at the Curragh, culminating in a victory over Air Chief Marshal in Europe’s first juvenile Group 1 of the season, the Phoenix Stakes.

He was also successful in the Group 2 Railway Stakes and retires as the winner of three of his ten starts and £244,633
in earnings.

One of 15 Group 1 winners by Danehill Dancer, Alfred Nobel hails from one of Burns’ most famous families, as a grandson of Irish Champion Stakes runner-up Dazzling Park, herself a half-sister to Derby winner New Approach and daughter of champion Park Express. Stallion sons of Danehill Dancer have enjoyed a productive year on the track with Choisir siring the brilliant sprinter Starspangledbanner and Monsieur Bond represented by Prix de l’Abbaye heroine Gilt Edge Girl.

Christy Grassick, manager of Coolmore, said: “Alfred Nobel was a very fast two-year-old and is a fine looking horse with great presence. He’s also from a great family and we’re very encouraged by the fact that two of Danehill Dancer’s first sons to retire to stud sired Group 1 winners in Europe this year.”
