Dunboyne Express is part ofa strong classic generation by Shamardal

Shamardal classic hope returns today

THE Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial at 3pm today sees the return of one of Shamardal's brightest prospects for the coming Flat season in Dunboyne Express.

Alongside such well-regarded classic hopefuls as Casamento and Dubai Prince, the Darley sire's second-crop three-year-olds appear capable of further adding to their sire's reputation based on their juvenile performances.

Dunboyne Express, owned and bred by John Connaughton, won his first two starts before finishing fifth to Casamento in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster. He was offered for his breeder by Jockey Hall Stud at Tattersalls October Book 1 but was unsoldat 48,000gns.

His year-older Rock Of Gibraltar half-sister Cojo was a maiden in three starts though was denied by a just a short head at Salisbury at two, while another half-sister, Angels Story by Galileo, won a maiden and a handicapover 1m2f at three.

Their dam, Love Excelling by Polish Precendent, was bred in France by Lordship Stud, and raced only once when well-beaten as favourite. She is a half-sister to Oaks heroine Love Divine, herself also dam of St Leger winner Sixties Icon.

In opposition to Dunboyne Express is Cocozza, by Elusive Quality. He was bred by Watership Down Stud out of the Sadler's Wells mare Watership Crystal.

Having not sold as a yearling at the Keeneland September sale, he was sold for 85,000gns at last year's Craven breeze-up.

Aidan O'Brien runs Exodus, a Montjeu colt who won a 1m maiden at Navan and was fourth in the 1m2f Criterium de Saint-Cloud last year. The field is completed by Whipless, a son of Whipper out of a mare by King's Theatre.

Whipless's breeder John O'Connor stands King's Theatre - more renowned over jumps - and stood Whipper too until his move to Haras du Mezeray for the 2011 season. Trainer Jim Bolger paid €77,000 for Whipless at the Goffs Orby sale.
