Starspangledbanner crosses the line to win October 10, 2009 in Melbourne Australia

Starspangledbanner: set to join Aidan O'Brien after his next start

Coolmore's big acquisition wins Caulfield sprint

COOLMORE'S A$10 million buy Starspangledbanner backed up his huge valuation when winning the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday.

The Choisir colt will run once more in Australia, in the Newmarket Handicap in a fortnight's time, before joining Aidan O'Brien for a European campaign this coming season. Until then his Australian owners will collect any prize money won.

The Oakleigh Plate was a second Group 1 victory for Starspangledbanner, after his Caulfield Guineas win last October. He was previously described as "a valuable stallion prospect" by Coolmore Australia's general manager Michael Kirwan.

His trainer, Leon Corstens, said: "This is fantastic, super. He did a fantastic job when he was fourth in the Lightning [Stakes] and coming here today with the things that have gone on and the dream that it has been has been great.

"It is great to do this for Coolmore and do this for our owners. I just have to catch my breath.

"I still think there is a little bit of improvement with fitness. He has just done so well this preparationand I will think we will see a better horse in the Newmarket again."
