First American winner for Encosta De Lago

CHAMPION Australian sire Encosta de Lagosired his first American winner on Saturday when Lagoon Of Diamonds broke his maiden at Mountaineer Park in West Virginia by seven lengths.

Kelly Ackerman trains the two-year-old colt on behalf of breeder Charles Fipke. He was originally trained by Bob Baffert, in whose name the colt was purchased for $500,000 at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale.

Out of the placed Machiavellian mare Nicole And Krista, Lagoon Of Diamonds is one of seven winners from the crop produced during Encosta De Lago's sole season at Coolmore in Ireland.

The son of Fairy King is the sire of 17 Group 1 winners worldwide and is standing the current southern hemisphere season at Coolmore's Australian base for A$143,000.
