Giant's Causeway sires 100th stakes winner

COOLMORE'S flagship Kentucky sire Giant's Causeway reached a notable landmark on Sunday when his son Northern Causeway won the $50,000 Richmond Derby Trial Handicap at Hastings in the US to become his sire's 100th stakes winner.

Three-year-old Northern Causeway outbattled Commander to take the 1m 1/2f event by a neck, and record his third win from ten starts.

Bred by Indian Creek in Kentucky, he is the first stakes winner out of Getaway Girl, a Silver Deputy half-sister to US Horse of the Year Ghostzapper and Grade I winner City Zip.

Among Giant's Causeway's 100 stakes winners are 19 at the top level including Classic winners and successful sires Footstepsinthesand (2,000 Guineas) and Shamardal (Poule d'Essai des Poulains).

The 14-year-old son of Storm Cat,who became known as 'The Iron Horse' following five consecutive Group 1 wins as a three-year-old for Aidan O'Brien, stood the past season at Ashford Stud in Kentucky for $85,000.
