Septimus to stand as  jumps sire at Coolmore

CRACK stayer Septimus will be a new recruit to the Coolmore jumps stallion roster next year.

The six-year-old is by Sadler's Wells - responsible for three of the top five jumps sires by prize money in the 2008-9 season - and out of the Darshaan mare Caladira, from the family of Lord Gayle, source of leading jumps sires Strong Gale and Lord Americo.

Purchased by Demi O'Byrne for €220,000 at Goffs, he carried Derrick Smith's colours to victory in the Beresford Stakes at two, and was an eight-length winner of the Dante Stakes the following season.

After finishing second to stablemate Scorpion in the Coronation Cup at four, he was stepped up in distance and soon established himself among the cream of the stayers, with convincing victories in the Lonsdale Cup and Doncaster Cup.

Septimus reserved his most visually impressive performance until the age of five, when he demolished the opposition in the Irish St Leger, coasting home 13 lengths clear of his closest pursuer. With that first top-flight victory he became the eighth Group 1 winner produced on the famed Sadler's Wells/Darshaan cross.

He has not raced since returning sore after finishing down the field in last year's Melbourne Cup, and a crack at the Breeders' Cup Marathon was ruled out by his trainer Aidan O'Brien last month.

Septimus is set to join fellow sons of Sadler's Wells Brian Boru, Dr Massini, Milan and Oscar in Coolmore's jumps division.
