Galileo filly headlines sticky SGA opener

SGA SELECTED YEARLING SALE DAY 1 COMPARATIVE FIGURES (€)

2008 123 115 79 3,021,000 38,240 25,000

IMPRESSIVE Sussex Stakes winner Rip Van Winkle has been the chief standard-bearer for the SGA Selected Yearling Sale this year - he was bought for €170,000 by John O'Byrne at the 2007 auction - so it was unsurprising to see Galileo's sole offspring at this year's renewal steal the headlines in Monday's first session of the two-day sale.

The yearling in question, a SARL-consigned filly out of the Listed-winning Muhtarram mare Frottola from the further family of Nashmiah and Royal Ballerina, was the subject of a bidding war between trainer Bruno Grizzetti and breeder Luciano Salice. Grizzetti, who purchased 10 other lots in the opening session, triumphed at €180,000.

The sale-topper made €100,000 more than the next-highest priced yearling, the second lot through the ring, a half-brother to Listed scorer Alta Fedelta by Darley freshman sire Dubawi. Dick O'Gorman signed the docket on behalf of Darley.

La Nuova Sbarra was active at the top of the market, paying €70,000 for a Cape Cross filly from the immediate family of Asian Heights and St Expedit, and €65,000 for a Sakhee half-brother to dual Listed winner Mia Diletta.

Pinhooker Con Marnane was on the mark for three yearlings, including a €60,000 Dalakhani half-sister to this year's Italian Listed winner Burdlaz.

Most of the indicators of the sale's economic health were down, with the turnover falling 24 per cent from last year's opening session to €2,286,00, the average dropping 25 per cent to €28,575, and the clearance rate standing at 61 per cent compared to 69 per cent last year. The median remained unchanged at €25,000.
