Competition to name Rachel's foal launched

STONESTREET Farm in Kentucky are offering fans the chance to visit US champion Rachel Alexandra and her first foal by Curlin, a colt born on January 22.

Touched by the interest shown by racing fans in Rachel Alexandra and her colt, Barbara Banke and Rachel Alexandra's co-owner Harold McCormick have decided to open the naming process for the foal - the product of two American Horses of the Year - to the public.

"We cannot think of a better time than Valentine's Day to further share this experience with the fans by welcoming name suggestions for our precious bay colt with a bright white star, striking resemblance to his mother and grand spirit," said Banke. "We are looking for a very special name for our special colt that reflects the vision and celebrates the memory of Jess (Jackson)."

Name suggestions should be submitted via email at or directly to by midnight EST on Sunday, February 19. One submission per household will be accepted and should include the fan's the name, mailing address and contact phone number.

If a suggested name is chosen, Stonestreet will host the winning fan and a guest for an overnight stay in the guesthouse at Stonestreet with a private tour of the farm and visit with Rachel Alexandra and her colt. In the event the final selection reflects multiple submissions, a drawing will determine the winner.

Rachel Alexandra burst on to the American racing scene with a devastating 20-length win in the 2009 Kentucky Oaks, after which she became the first filly in 85 years to win the Preakness Stakes. The daughter of Medaglia d'Oro was also successful in the Mother Goose Stakes, Haskell Invitational and Woodward Stakes.

The six-year-old mare will be covered this year by Bernardini.

Her colt's sire, two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, stands at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky for $40,000.
