THE reduction in American foal crop has taken its toll on this year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale, set for September 11 -24.

Although still a mammoth affair that stretches over 13 sessions, this year's sale comprises six books of 4,319 yearlings, down 538 from 2010. As in 2010, the auction will open with a select 211-strong Book 1 staged over two evening sessions. However, Book 2 has been reduced by a session to three days and 935 yearlings, and is followed by a dark day on Friday September 16. Selling resumes with Book 3 on Saturday September 17.

A smatteringof European sires are represented throughout the sale led by Galileo, the sire of two yearlings including a daughter of Grade 1 heroine Adoration, Pivotal, Danehill Dancer, Cape Cross, Hurricane Run and Raven's Pass.

The last-named, who won the Breeders' Cup Classic for John Gosden, is represented by 11 yearlings including a half-brother to Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Carry On Katie while his Santa Anita victim, Curlin, is represented by 63.

Stand-outs on paper include a brother to Dubai World Cup hero Well Armed (22); a Street Cry half-sister to Russian Rhythm (35); a Bernardini colt out of champion Flanders (61); a Lemon Drop Kid half-brother to Theyskens'theory (71); a Henrythenavigator half-brother to Smarty Jones (74); an Unbridled's Song half-sister to Roman Ruler and El Corredor (116); a Giant's Causeway half-brother to Sleepytime and Ali-Royal (143); and a Medaglia d'Oro half-sister to Stravinsky (168).

Last year's sale was topped by a son of A P Indy out of Zenyatta's Grade 1-winning half-sister Balance who was sold to Besilu Stables for $4.2 million. His half-brother by Street Cry - and therefore a three-parts brother to Zenyatta - is catalogued as lot 147.
