Afternoon Deelites retired to Old Friends

BURT Bacharach’s homebred Grade 1 winner Afternoon Deelites is the latest arrival at Michael Blowen’s Old Friends equine retirement facility in Kentucky.

The 19-year-old son of Private Terms has been retired from the breeding shed at Clear Creek Stud in Louisiana due to infertility.

Afternoon Deelites had stood at Clear Creek since 2004. He had originally been retired to stand at Brereton Jones’s Airdrie Stud in Kentucky.

Clear Creek owner Val Murrell said: “It is always a sad day when you lose the services of a horse of Afternoon Deelites’ quality.

“His average earnings per starter of $56,000-plus has made him very appealing to the breeders in Louisiana. He will be hard to replace. I would really like to express my gratitude to Michael Blowen for agreeing to let Afternoon Deelites live out his retirement there.”

Trained by Richard Mandella, Afternoon Deelites won his first three starts at two including the Grade 1 Hollywood Futurity, in which he beat Thunder Gulch.

The following season his victories included the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes and Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, plus he was a head second to Larry The Legend in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. He also finished eighth, beaten around seven lengths by the winner Thunder Gulch, in the Kentucky Derby.

Afternoon Deelites’ best progeny include Deeliteful Irving, winner of the Grade 2 Pan American Handicap and runner-up to Sulamani in the Grade 1 Turf Classic Invitational, Zappa, winner of the Grade 2 San Pasqual Handicap, and dual Grade 3 scorer Three Hour Nap. He is also sire of British-trained 11-time winner Takes Tutu.

The stallion proved a hit in Louisiana, where his progeny included two state-bred champions in Princess Deelite and Nob Hill Deelite.

Afternoon Deelites’ overall stud record stands at 309 winners and 23 stakes winners with progeny earnings of $21,700,000.
He covered 27 mares last year and has 34 two-year-olds for 2011.
