Chance for Smadoun
to make presence felt

RACING Post Chase top weight Nacarat heads a strong battalion on today's Kempton card for Haras des Sablonnets' stallion Smadoun.

The 20-year-old son of Kaldoun, who stands for just €2,000, is best known as the sire of French Group 1 winner Chichicastenango, inturn the sire of Prix du Jockey-Club hero Vision d'Etat.

But thanks to the likes of Nacarat and Oumeyade, he also enjoys a good reputation as a jumps sire, something which could be added to this afternoon when Tonic Mellysse and Molotof line up in Kempton's opener, Thebettingsite.com Adonis Juvenile Hurdle.

The pair are owned by Simon Munir and sit at the head of the market after showing high-class form in France; the Paul Nicholls-trained Tonic Mellysse beat the highly regarded Tigre d'Aron when scoring on his final start at Pau while Molotof, who represents last year's winning trainer Nicky Henderson, has been second on both his outings.

Munir's colours will be carried later on the card in thewilliamhill.com Dovecote Novices' Hurdle by triple winner Celtus, another descendant of Kaldoun's sire, Kenmare. The four-year-old gelding is by the Lockinge Stakes winner Keltos, who stands at Dehesa de Milagro in Spain.

Arguably a more surprising influence in the Adonis Hurdle is Primo Dominie, a high-class sprint two-year-old who became a good source of fast horses. The son of Dominion features today as the broodmare sire of Maoi Chinn Tire (by Mull Of Kintyre) and paternal grandsire of Mr Muddle, one of a handful of jumpers by the Italian Group 1 winner Imperial Dancer.

In addition to Tonic Mellysse, Nicholls also sends out the regally-connected Zarkandar, an Azamour half-brother to Zarkava. The gelding was a winner over 1m4f at Clairfontaine in July for Alain de Royer-Dupre and his breeder, the Aga Khan.
