Further reason to
lament loss of Cacique

A full breeding analysis of Census and Excelebration will appear in the results section of Sunday's Racing Post.

ONLY five yearlings by Juddmonte's sub-fertile Cacique were offered at the 2009 Tattersalls October Sale, two of whom were snapped up by John Warren. The most expensive of the pair, 95,000gns purchase Dominant, won the valuable £150,000 Tattersalls Millions 3yo Cup while the second, 55,000gns purchase Census, entered the St Leger reckoning with an impressive winning display in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes on Saturday at Newbury.

Other high-class representatives by Cacique, a 1m3f Grade 1-winning brother to Dansili, include Prix Jean Prat winner Mutual Trust and the Group 3-placed Slumber, all from a first crop of just 31 foals.

Census is bred along similar lines to Dansili's high-class son Strategic Prince being out of a granddaughter of Sharpen Up, in his case Selkirk. Bred by Brian Williamson, he is the first foal out of Slieve, an unraced sister to 2003 Group 1 Gran Premio di Milano winner Leadership and half-sister to Havant, the wide-margin winner of last season's Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes.

Impressive Hungerford Stakes winner Excelebration, who cost trainer Marco Botti just £20,000 at the 2009 DBS St Leger Sale, is one of 15 Group winners by Darley's Exceed And Excel.

A half-brother to minor winner Mull Of Killough, Excelebration was bred byOwenstown Stud - also the breeder of recent Vintage Stakes winner Chandlery - out of the placed Sun Shower, who was exported to India after selling to Hugo Merry for €10,000 at Goffs in November 2008. She is out of half-sister to 1984 Irish Oakswinner Princess Pati and daughter of 1976 Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Sarah Siddons.

Sun Shower has a two-year-old colt by Strategic Prince and a colt foal from the first crop of Grade 1 winner Dancing Forever.
