Cash-rich Goodwood maidens attract praise

THE organisers of the Racing Post Yearling Bonus have welcomed the prize-money on offer for juvenile maidens atnext week's Glorious Goodwood meeting, saying they would help achieve the cherished aim of covering an owner’s training fees with one win.

At a time when there is a focus on racecourses to maintain maiden prize-money levels, and not cut them in the knowledge that a £10,000 yearling bonus would compensate for any reduction, Goodwood will next week stage three maidens worth a combined £55,000.

If each race – one is worth £15,000, two are £20,000 – is won by a horse eligible for the bonus, then the funding pool would increase to £85,000 for three maidens.

Philip Freedman, whose job it is to decide which races should be included in the yearling bonus scheme, said next week's maidens had been specifically targeted.

"Goodwood stages some of the most valuable maiden races in the country and so they were always on our radar – Newbury is another, which is why they are staging eight bonus races this year," he said.

"If racecourses are prepared to put on significant prize-money they are much more likely to be allocated a yearling bonus race. They type of money that might be won at Goodwood can only be good for racing as a whole.

"The original idea for the bonus races was to offer at least £20,000 in total so that an owner could cover their training fees in one go,” Freedman added.

"However, after having conversations with trainers in particular, it was felt that they would rather have more opportunities to win £10,000 than a smaller pool of races."

Goodwood managing director Rod Fabricius said he was supportive of the yearling bonus, saying: "It is that kind of creative thinking that is going to save the sport, we can’t rely too much on the Levy by the looks of things.

"Anything that is going to encourage new owners to go and buy horses at the sales has got to be a good thing."
