Galileo leads way for Europeans at Arlington

EUROPEAN-bred horses dominated the Grade 1 races at Arlington on Saturday night with the influence of Galileo almost inevitably strong.

Galileo had a double via Cape Blanco in the Arlington Million and Treasure Beach in the Secretariat Stakes, while Stacelita proved atriumph for German breeding by landing the Beverley D. Although listed as French-bred, she is by Monsun out of a Dashing Blade mare.

Sold to Demi O’Byrne by Garraun Stud as a yearling at Goffs for €330,000, Cape Blanco is a half-brother to Grade 2 Kelso Breeders’ Handicap (at Belmont) winner Mr O’Brien. His dam, the Presidium mare Laurel Delight, is a half-sister to top sprinter Paris House.

Cape Blanco’s fourth dam Lighted Lamp is also third dam of Prix de Diane winner Latice; this is the family of French Derby winner Lawman and Saturday’s Listed winning juvenile Fencing.

Treasure Beach is the product of a variation of the famed Sadler’s Wells/Darshaan cross being by Galileo out of a mare by Darshaan’s talented miler son Mark Of Esteem. He  is out of Honorine, a triple 1m-10f winner at three to four for Pip Payne and a half-sister to Hardwicke Stakes winner Indian Creek out of smart French middle-distance performer Blue Water. Bred by Ashley House Stud, Treasure Beach was consigned on their behalf as a foal at Tattersalls in 2008 by Trickledown Stud and bought for 180,000ns by Camas Park Stud.

Stacelita’s Beverley D victory marked a 1-2 for European-breds as the runner-up was the Aston Mullins-bred Dubawi Heights. She is out of a decent German juvenilein Soignee, by Dashing Blade, who herself is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Simoun (like Stacelita, by Monsun). Furthern back this is the family of the Wildenstein’s Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Steinlen and their Group 2 Prix jean de Chaudenay winner Seurat.
