WinStar acquire Sidney's Candy as future sire

GRADE 1 winner Sidney's Candy has been purchased by a partnership headed by WinStar Farm and turned over to trainer Todd Pletcher for the remainder of his racing career.

The four-year-old son of Candy Ride will race in the colours of WinStar Farm and will stand at the Kentucky stud upon his retirement.

"It's an exciting time when you can add a horse like Sidney's Candy to the racing stable and eventually to the WinStar stallion roster," said WinStar president Elliott Walden.

"He's one of the truly brilliant horses in racing when you consider what he's accomplished. This colt has recorded triple-digit Beyers on all three surfaces and set two track records – one of them at two over 5½ furlongs."

He added: "Not many horses of this generation have his versatility or speed. He has been first or second in 52 out of 60 points of call so far in his racing career, which shows you he is not only fast but can carry it around two turns. He's truly an impressive horse and we feel fortunate to have him."

Sidney's Candy was bred and raced by the Craig Family Trust - best known in European racing circles as owners of 1992 Derby hero Dr Devious.

He has five Graded Stakes victories to his name for trainer Jon Sadler, headed by the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, which he won by four and a half lengths from Setsuko, with Lookin At Lucky in third.

This season at four, he has finished second in two Grade 2 events - the Mervyn Leroy Handicap and American Handicap.

His sire Candy Ride has come to the fore with his first two crops yielding five Grade 1 winners, including Misremembered and Twirling Candy.

Sidney's Candy is out of the Storm Cat mare Fair Exchange, a daughter of three-time Grade 1-winning mare Exchange.
