Major declines at Barretts January Sale

THE Barretts January Mixed Sale in Pomona, California, on Monday provided little cheer, returning decreases across-the-board against last year's two-day renewal.

Although the 74 per cent clearance rate was a marked improvement on last year's figure of 62 per cent, the aggregate plummeted 32 per cent to $1,361,600 for 257 horses sold. The average and median also suffered, falling 28 and 22 per cent to $5,298 and $2,500.

Late entry Smoothe As Candy offered by far the brightest spot of the day, selling for $70,000 to Narvick International. Consigned by Rancho Paseana, the four-year-old daughter of Candy Ride is a sister to Grade 3 winner Chocolate Candy and from the immediate family of another talented performer by Candy Ride in recent Grade 1 winner Twirling Candy.

It was a drop down to the second dearestlot of the day, a two-year-old filly by Tribal Rule who was sold to Marcelo Polanco for $38,000.
