Camelot dam set for date with Giant's Causeway
TARFAH, the dam of last year's Triple Crown contender Camelot, will be covered by Kentucky-based Giant's Causeway this season.
The dam of two runners to date, both of whom are winners, Tarfah was a triple stakes winner, landing the Group 3 Dahlia Stakes and two Listed races for Newmarket trainer Gerard Butler.
The exploits of Camelot in recent seasons, first as a highly promising winner of the Racing Post Trophy before just failing in his bid to land the Triple Crown after sealing victory in the 2,000 Guineas and Derby, marked the daughter of Kingmambo as a broodmare to follow, and in visiting Ashford Stud's Giant's Causeway, the resulting offspring will be another bred in the purple.
Recently crowned leading North American sire by earnings for the third year in a row, the five-time Group 1 winner currently stands for $85,000 at Coolmore's Ashford Stud.
On the pairing, general manager Dermot Ryan commented to the Daily Racing Forum "that shows how international [Giant's Causeway] is, when you see mares of that calibre coming over here".
Giant's Causeway, whose top progeny include dual French Classic hero and sire Shamardal, Breeders' Cup winner Aragorn and classy Japanese runner Eishin Apollon, has already enjoyed success when crossed with Kingmambo mares, headed by Red Giant, who snatched a head victory in the 2008 Grade 1 Clement L Hirsch Memorial Turf Championship.
