CAMELOT (c Montjeu - Tarfah by Kingmambo)

Bred by Sheikh Abdulla Bin Isa Al-Khalifa in Britain

THE late Montjeu regained his spot at the head of the European sires' list ahead of Galileo on Saturday when his unbeaten son Camelot fended off Born To Sea to take the Irish Derby.

Camelot's victory saw him become the fourth Irish Derby winner by Montjeu following Hurricane Run, Frozen Fire and Fame And Glory. The former Coolmore stallion himself won the 1999 renewal of the race by five lengths for Andre Fabre.

However, Montjeu still has some way to go if he is to match the Irish Derby record of his sire Sadler's Wells, who was represented by six winners - Old Vic, Salsabil, Dream Well, Montjeu, Galileo and High Chaparral.

Montjeu, who died at Coolmore earlier this year at the age of 16, is the sire of 25 Group/Grade 1 winners including four Epsom Derby winners in Authorized, Motivator and Pour Moi in addition to Camelot. His other standout performers this season include St Nicholas Abbey, who was successful in the Diamond Jubilee Coronation Cup earlier this year.

Bought by Coolmore for 525,000gns from Highclere Stud at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Camelot is one of two winners out of Dahlia Stakes winner Tarfah (Kingmambo), who in turn is out of Fickle, a 1m2f Listed winner. Fickle was a granddaughter of Cheshire and Lancashire Oaks winner One Over Parr, a sister to 1974 Oaks heroine Polygamy.

Tarfah has a yearling colt by Pivotal.
