Son of Sequalo new force in Australian sprinting

BURDEKIN BLUES, a four-year-old son of Sequalo, emerged as the new sprinting star on the Australian scene with a commanding win in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Queensland speedster, trained by Barry Baldwin, had won his previous three starts in his home state in devastating fashion, and in his first start in black type company, dealt with his rivals in no uncertain terms.

With top Queensland rider Shane Scriven in the saddle, Burdekin Blues went straight to the front and was never headed in the $A200,000 (£87,000) feature.

He held an advantage of almost two lengths on the home turn, and once Scriven gave him a little more rein, he raced clear to won by two and a-quarter lengths from Gold Trail, with Hurried Choice a half-length back third and Mentality a good fourth.

Burdekin Blues, the 9-5 favourite, was timed to run the 6f in a smart 1m09.76s, with the last three furlongs in 34.54s.

"I always knew he was a handy sprinter, but I did not think he would do this - it's great," said Baldwin.

"He will now go to Melbourne for a crack at the Newmarket on March 7 - we may as well have a go while he's in such good form," said the astute trainer.

The $A1m (£450,000) Newmarket over 6f will be the acid test for Burdekin Blues. It always produces a star-studded line-up, and the current co-favourites for the event are Weekend Hussler and Fist Of Fury at 11-2, with Burdekin Blues a 9-1 shot.

Burdekin Blues cost $A32,000 (£14,355) at the 2006 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. His sire Sequalo is a son of Rustic Amber, the champion three-year-old sprinter in Ireland in 1986. He stands at Lyndhurst Stud in Queensland, and his fee for the 2008 southern hemisphere breeding season was A$13,200 (£5,996 / €6,855).

Sequalo has sired 110 individual winners to date, including Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr1) winner Star Shiraz.
