Derby hopes for Super Saver's half-brother

WINSTAR Farm will be hoping lightning can strike twice after watching their homebred Brethren remain unbeaten in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday.

The son of WinStar resident Distorted Humor is a half-brother to Super Saver, who carried the farm's colours to victory through the mud in last year's Kentucky Derby.

Despite not breaking well, Brethren was soon prominent under Ramon Dominguez and by the two-furlong marker had opened up a commanding lead. He passed under the wire four lengths ahead of Too Good (by Drewman).

Brethren is trained by Todd Pletcher, who also sent out Super Saver to win three races. The pair are of out the A P Indy mare Supercharger, a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Daydreaming from the family of influential sire Private Account.

Super Saver, a son of Maria's Mon, is about to serve his first season for $20,000 at WinStar Farm in Kentucky alongside close relation Bluegrass Cat - a leading first season sire in the US last year - and Distorted Humor, whose first crop contained a Kentucky Derby winner in Funny Cide.

Distorted Humor is also the sire of last year's Belmont Stakes hero Drosselmeyer, another to don the WinStar colours. The Grade 2-winning son of Forty Niner stands for $100,000.
