BOLD SIR BRIAN (5 g Brian Boru - Black Queen by Bob Back)

Breeder: Heinz Pollmeier in Ireland

ST Leger winner Brian Boru, who stands at the Beeches Stud in Ireland, was represented by his first Graded winner over jumps on Saturday when Bold Sir Brian pulled off a 20/1 surprise in the Premier Kelso Hurdle.

Brian Boru's first 114-strong crop are five-year-olds and already number six winners from 17 runners in Britain and Ireland. In addition to Bold Sir Brian, they include the unbeaten bumper winner Arbeo and dual scorer Jukebox Melody.

The son of Sadler's Wells has 148 four-year-olds in his second crop and 102 three-year-olds in his third crop.

A win in the 2003 St Leger was the highlight of Brian Boru's racing career while he was also second in the Irish St Leger and third in two renewals of the Canadian International. He stands for €2,500.

Bred on the same Sadler's Wells - Bob Back cross as Welsh Grand National winner Synchronised, Bold Sir Brian is the first winner from six foals of racing age out of 1998 Galway Handicap Hurdle winner Black Queen.

Black Queen has a three-year-old colt and two-year-old filly both by Royal Anthem.

Distillery Stud paid €11,000 for Bold Sir Brian at the 2006 Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale and resold him for £20,000 to his owner A. Trotter at the 2009 DBS Spring Sale.
