Zayat unearths another gem by Empire Maker

THREE years after Empire Maker's Pioneerof The Nile finished second to Mine That Bird in the Kentucky Derby, his owner Ahmed Zayat has another live candidate by the same sire for the Churchill Downs Classic next month with Saturday's
Grade 1 Arkansas Derby winner Bodemeister.

Bodemeister was theleast experienced horse in the field for the Arkansas Derby but he eased to an impressive nine and a half-length victory in the 1m1f event at Oaklawn Park.

He is now likely to start among the favourites for the Kentucky Derby, though he has to overcome historical precedent, as no horse who was unraced at two has won the Classic since Apollo in 1882.

Egyptian-born entrepreneur Zayat has enjoyed a good association with Empire Maker, a triple Grade 1-winning son of Unbridled who stood at his owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms in Kentucky until being purchased to stand in Japan in 2010.

Zayat owned and bred the stallion's son Pioneerof The Nile to win the CashCall Futurity and Santa Anita Derby before finishing second in the Kentucky Derby. Mushka won the
Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes for Zayat before he sold her to Brushwood Stable for $2.4 million at Keeneland in 2008.

Bodemeister was bred by Audley Farm out of the Storm Cat mare Untouched Talent, winner of the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes and runner-up in the Grade 1 Del Mar debutante Stakes.

Zayat bought the colt for $260,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale.
