Snow Bride, Oaks winner and Derby producer, dies

From 13 foals of racing, Snow Bride produced seven winners led by Lammtarra, an early star for Saeed bin Suroor who defied inexperience to take the Derby on only his second start.

The son of Nijinsky went on to run out a narrow winner of the King George and Arc, and following a single season at Dalham Hall Stud, which yielded the Oaks third Melikah, was sold for a reported $30m to stand at Arrow Stud in Japan.

He returned to Dalham Hall in 2006, where he currently lives in retirement.

Snow Bride also produced the UAE stakes winner Kammtarra and Listed-placed Haltarra to Zilzal, while two visits to Seeking The Gold yielded the French Group 3 winner Saytarra and Grade 2-placed Qais. She also bred the Listed-placed Abhisheka to Sadler's Wells.

Her final foal, the Pivotal filly Concordia, won at Segre in France earlier this month.

Trained by Henry Cecil on behalf of Saeed Maktoum al Maktoum, Snow Bride comfortably won both her starts as a two-year-old including the Listed Danepak Bacon Stakes at Newmarket.

Her Oaks aspirations were temporarily derailed when a heavily-backed flop in the Pretty Polly Stakes but she went on to prove that running all wrong next time out with a half length defeat of Pilot in the Musidora Stakes at York.

In the Oaks itself, Snow Bride was no match for Aliysa, who swept past her rivals to score by three lengths. But she stayed on to narrowly secure second place from Roseate Tern, and was awarded the race when Aliysa was subsequently disqualified following the detection of camphor in a post race sample.

After taking fourth in the Prix Vermeille, Snow Bride ended her career with a win in the Princess Royal Stakes, in which she had to call upon all her courage to wear down Princess Sobieska.

Out of the Yorkshire Oaks winner Awaasif, Snow Bride was a half-sister to Grade 3 winners Jarraar and Ibn Al Haitham.
