Blue Bunting half-sister to be sold on fifth day

GIVEN the alphabetical nature of Keeneland's catalog system, it is no surprise strong pedigrees will still be on offer by the fifth day of the sale. Case inpoint is Hip No. 1010, a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Blue Bunting, who sells on the last day of Book 2.

"We have had a lot of European interest in her," said consignor John Stuart of Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services. "But, there hasn't been as much interest in her from people from all over the world like I thought we would. I think she could be a bargain."

The bay filly is by freshman sire English Channel, who was the 2007 champion turf horse in the United States. Stuart added that this is likely the last filly from the Linamix mare Miarixa to be offered at public auction.

"This is the chance," Stuart said. "The key for me is what a great little mover she is. This filly is a bit smaller than Blue Bunting was at this point, but she is a beautiful, athletic walker. All three fillies I have seen out of the mare tend to look like their mother."

Stuart also consigned Blue Bunting as a yearling for her breeder Brad Kelley. The Dynaformer filly sold for $200,000 to Anthony Stroud at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale.

"It was sure an honor to be able to sell her," Stuart said. "I rated her as the best yearling that this man bred that year. The problem we had in not getting a better price is that she did have surgery as a yearling. She had lucencies in her hindankles.

"Although some smart buyers were interested in her at Saratoga, she didn't vet good enough. Anthony was smart enough to not bother with that and bought her."

Kelley, who owns part of English Channel, has retained Miarixa's 2-year-old filly, French Hen. She is currently in training in Ireland with Dermot Weld.
