BHA backs Yearling Bonus as 'goodinitiative'

BHA chairman Paul Roy has described the Racing Post Yearling Bonus was an example of "good initiative" as he threw his support behind the incentive scheme.

Created by British and Irish yearling vendors, the scheme is designed to give owners a chance to recoup some of their outlay at the yearling sales by paying a £10,000 bonus to winners of nominated two-year-old maiden races in 2010.

Vendors are aiming to raise £2 million for the bonus fund, which is being back by the Racing Post, the series' media partner.

Roy said: "In these tough economic times it's important for the breeding industry to help itself and a scheme like this shows good initiative.

"Through British Bloodstock Marketing we're supporting the scheme and hope that this innovative scheme pays off with some new owners coming into the sport and a buoyant set of yearling sales."

Owners also supported the initiative and Paul Dixon, president of the Racehorse Owners' Association, said: "I have been working very closely with David Redvers on it.

"The ROA and the Horsemen's Group have had a lot of input into the scheme. We are very supportive of any self-help scheme that's out there.

"With the economic situation as it is, any scheme that will encourage people to go out and buy yearlings with a view to winning a substantial bonus is welcomed by the industry, particularly owners and breeders."
