Best of 2011 celebrated at ITBA Southern Awards

SWETTENHAM Stud were among the winners at the ITBA Southern Region Awards on Sunday evening. Emmeline Hill from Equinome and Ben Hill from Celtic Products Ltd co-sponsored the event, which took place during the Cheltenham Preview evening at the Dunraven Arms in County Limerick.

The Sangster family's operation bred last year's top-class filly Dancing Rain, who scooped the Flat filly award as the winner of the Epsom and German Oaks. The daughter of Danehill Dancer is out of Rain Flower, a half-sister to Maybe's dam Sumora.

Captain Chris: National Hunt chaser of the year

Derby hero Pour Moi, now covering his first book at Coolmore, was named Flat colt of the year. The son of Montjeu, a three-parts brother to the Group 1-placed Gagnoa, was bred by Lynch Bages Ltd.

The National Hunt Hurdler Award went to Oscars Well, winner of last year's Grade 1 Deloitte Novice Hurdle and Grade 1 Navan Novice Hurdle who was bred by Eugene O'Leary, while the accolade for National Hunt Chaser was awarded to Arkle Chase winner Captain Chris, bred by Noreen Walsh out of the top two-mile chaser Function Dream.

The highlight of the evening was the Contribution to the Industry award, which was awarded to Michael Lyons from Mount Coote Stud. Stud director Luke Lillingston commended Lyons for his dedication and loyality.
