Grade 1 winner Friends Lake sold to Saudi Arabia

GRADE 1 Florida Derby winner Friends Lake and Grade 2 winner Beethoven, a four-year-old son of Sky Mesa, will stand in Saudi Arabia next season after being purchased by undisclosed interests in a deal brokered by Chad Schumer of Schumer Bloodstock.

Their acquisitions signal a further increase in prominence in the industry by Saudi Arabian breeders, who were active at last year's breeding stock sales in the US and plan to be so again.

Friends Lake, who is by A P Indy out of the Grade 1-winning millionaire Antespend, enjoyed a good start at stud when siring Grade 3 winner Screen Your Friend in his first crop. He is represented this season by stakes winners Soundwave and Friendof Foe.

Friends Lake stood the past season at Airdrie Stud in Kentucky for $7,500.

Beethoven retires at the winner of three of seven starts including the Grade Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. A son of sky Mesa, he is out of the Grade 3-winning Carson City mare Moonlight Sonata.
