Dewhurst one-two for first-season-sire Oratorio

BEETHOVEN came with a withering late run in today's Dewhurst Stakes to deny stablemate Fencing Master by a neck.

The result provided a one-two for trainer Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore operation, as well as for first-season sire Oratorio.

Beethoven was sent off at odds of 33-1 having won only one of his nine starts prior to the Newmarket Group 1 event.

However the colt, the first foal out of the Listed-winning Sadler's Wells mare Queen Titi, has held his form admirably since he made his first start in May, finishing placed in the Anglesey Stakes and National Stakes and fourth in the Goffs Million Sprint. On his most recent start he was sixth behind Siyouni in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.

Beethoven's third dam is Luv Luvin', ancestress of other Ballydoyle Group 1 scorers Henrythenavigator, Saffron Walden and Listen. He was purchased by Hugo Merry Bloodstock for €260,000 at the Goffs Million yearling sale.

Fencing Master put up an eyecatching display, having to race wide of the field but making relentless progress and staying on resolutely, only being caught in the final strides.

The colt, a €400,000 Arqana August yearling sale purchase, is a half-brother to Prix de Diane runner-up Millionaia out of Prix Saint-Alary heroine Moonlight Dance, herself an Alysheba half-sister to Prix du Jockey-Club runner-up Marignan.

Beethoven and Fencing Master are representatives of Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, Eclipse and Irish Champion Stakes hero Oratorio's first crop of two-year-olds.

Their peers include Chesham Stakes winner Big Audio, Listed-placed Miracle Match and dual scorer Soul Heaven.

Oratorio, ason of Danehill from the family of champion sire Alydar, stood the 2009 breeding season at Coolmore for a fee of €17,500.

Vintage Stakes winner Xtension, who was bidding to become the third generation of Dewhurst Stakes winner after his sire Xaar and his grand-sire Zafonic, was a nose behind Fencing Master in third.
