Barretts marred by high number of unsold lots

A FILLY by former Juddmonte US sire Empire Maker topped the Barretts March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds In Training on Monday at $435,000 (£274,820/€329.741).

Consigned by Wavertree Stables, the filly has a fashionable pedigree in that her third dam is Terpsichorist, granddam of leading Kentucky Derby fancy Union Rags. Her sire, now in Japan. has produced 27 black-type winners, chiefly Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic winner Royal Delta. She was bought by Hisashi Wakahara to race in Japan. Wakahara's Danox Co Ltd also bought thesecond top lot, a $385,000 son of Macho Uno.

Transatlantic agent Jamie McCalmont was the leading buyer with seven purchases worth $940,.000.  McCalmont's clients include J Paul Reddam, who is to send horses from this sale to to former UK-based trainer Simon Callaghan.

With 77 lots offered, compared to 55 last year, the aggregate was inevitably up to $8,426,000(from $5,539,000).  The average also increased to $109,429 from $100,709. However, 44 juveniles were led out of the ring unsold.

"Surprised to see the amount of RNAs (reserves not attained) tonight," tweeted agent Peter Bradley. "Overambitious sellers? or is the market still not where it needs to be."
