Queen Mother homebred wins Listed chase

BARBERS SHOP, Sandown's Listed Future Star Chase winner, has the distinction of not only being owned by The Queen but one of the last horses to have been bred by the late Queen Mother.

The 2002 gelding by Saddlers' Hall, who finished second to Imperial Commander in the Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase at Cheltenham in November, is out of the non-winning, bumper-placed mare Close Harmony, who is from a long family line owned by the Queen Mother. The mare is by the good broodmare sire, Bustino, who was trained by present Queen's own trainer, the late Major Dick Hern.

The Queen took over the ownership of the Queen Mother's horses after her mother's death in 2002.

Unfortunately, the family was not a successful line for the Queen Mother and has not produced a black-type jump horse in the first three dams; Barbers Shop looks as though he could be the one to make a names for the family.

That is a view shared by the bookmakers and Paddy Power already make him a 16-1 chance (first show) for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Totesport 9-1 (from 14s) for the Ryanair Chase.

Trainer Nicky Henderson said: "He looked a man for the first time today. This was to see if he would go three miles and Mick [Fitzgerald] always said he would. He jumped and travelled like a good horse.

"I shouldn't think he'll be coming back [in trip] and I think they're being optimistic quoting those price for him in the Gold Cup, although we always thought he was a good horse."

He added: "We'll have to look at Pillars and Aons for him - but he's still very young."
