Zenyatta breaks maiden

SOUPER Spectacular, a half-brother to the brilliant Zenyatta, broke his maiden at the third time of asking when snaring a 1m turf maiden special weight by two lengths at Saratoga.

It was the first try on turf for the son of Giant's Causeway following outings on the dirt at Belmont Park, when fourth, and Monmouth Park, when unplaced.

Seth Benzel trains Souper Spectacular on behalf of Charlotte Weber's Live Oak Plantation, who shelled out $1.15 million for the colt at the 2008 Keeneland September Sale.

As well as the brilliant Zenyatta, who most recently landed the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsh Handicap to take her unbeaten tally to 18, Souper Spectacular is a half-brother to triple Grade 1 winner Balance and minor stakes winner Where's Bailey.

Their dam, minor winner Vertigineux, has a yearling filly by Bernardini named Eblouissante and a filly foal by Henrythenavigator.

Balance's first foal, a yearling colt by A P Indy, is catalogued as lot 14 at the upcoming Keeneland September Sale.
