BBAG mixed sale off to low-key start

A FILLY foal by leading first-season sire Shamardal topped a quiet opening session of BBAG's two-day mixed sale in Baden Baden this afternoon.

Gregor and Julia Baum's Gestüt Brümmerhof went to €40,000 to secure the filly, who is a half-sister to Czech 1,000 Guineas heroine Konigin Arte and out of a winning half-sister to Group scorers Konig Turf and Konig Shuffle.

The highest price the hammer came down at during the day was €46,000 for Gestüt Hofgut Heymann's Hurricane Run filly foal from the immediate family of Cavalryman. However, that figure was not enough, and the filly was led out of the ring unsold.

Daressalam, a Waldemar Hickst-trained Listed winner who was not beaten far into fourth in last year's Group 2 Union-Rennen, was sent up byhis owner-breeders Gestüt Röttgen.

The four-year-old son of Singspiel, whose dam was champion two-year-old filly in Germany in 1994 and whose half-brother Dickens was runner-up in the Deutsches Derby, was knocked down to Kazakh film director Ardah Amirkulov for the day's second highest price of €28,000.

Amirkulov bought the similarly-named Darsalam for only 6,500gns at the 2003 Tattersalls horses in training sale, and the horse subsequently became a high-class middle-distance performer, winning the Group 1 Rheinland-Pokal and finishing sixth in Rule Of Law's St Leger.

Only 101 of the 201 horses offered on the day changed hands, for a disappointing clearance rate of around 50 per cent. From the original 239 horses catalogued, 38 were withdrawn, 42 were not sold and 58 were registered as vendor buy-backs. The average price for horses sold, €4,921, was on a par with last year's figure of €4,935.

A BBAG press release said: "It was expected to be difficult, everyone was aware of that. The situation on the domestic market is of a very fragile nature at the moment and the auctioneers had a hard time finding potential bidders."
