Awesome new Grade 1 winner for Maria's Mon

LATE Kentucky sire Maria's Mon was represented by a new Grade 1 winner on Saturday when his daughter Awesome Maria made a breakthrough at the highest level in the Ogden Phipps Handicap for fillies and mares over 1m½f at Belmont Park.

Awesome Maria, a homebred for E. Paul Robsham Stables trained by Todd Pletcher, is now unbeaten in four starts this year at four - having won a pair of Grade 3 contests at Gulfstream Park and the Grade 2 Shuvee Handicap at Belmont last time out.

She won the Odgen Phipps by three lengths, chased home by two daughters of Medaglia D'Oro - Payton D'Oro in second and Super Espresso in third. The race had been weakened by the late withdrawal of Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic winner Unrivaled Belle, who was subsequently retired.

Last year Awesome Maria was runner-up to No Such Word in the Grade 1 Gazelle Stakes and at two she was second to Devil May Care in the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes.

Maria's Mon, a Grade 1-winning son of Wavering Monarch, has sired a host of Grade 1 winners headed by two Kentucky Derby heroes, Monarchos and Super Saver, and including Latent Heat, Monba and Wait A While.

He was on the mark as a broodmare sire this week at Royal Ascot, via Group 2 Norfolk Stakes winner Bapak Chinta.

Maria's Mon stood at Pin Oak Stud in Kentucky until 2008, when he was put down after suffering multiple organ dysfunction.

Awesome Maria is out of Discreetly Awesome, a daughter of Awesome Again and Grade 1 Alabama Stakes winner Pretty Discreet, a half-sister to Grade 1 Cigar Mile winner Discreet Cat and Grade 1 King's Bishop Stakes winner Discreetly Mine.
