Awesome Again back home after surgery

AWESOME AGAIN, who underwent colic surgery on September 13 at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington, is back home at Adena Springs, Kentucky.

The 17-year-old stallion, who has stood his entire career at the farm, had undergone an exploratory celiotomy for a strangulating lipoma (fatty tumor) of the small colon.

“We are cautiously optimistic,” said general manager Eric Hamelback to the TDN. “He has done everything to this point as well as could be expected. Anytime you have surgery of this magnitude, you’re always extremely concerned, but his attitude is good, and he’s been introduced back to feeding. He is doing very well. We are hand-grazing him as much as possible. So far, everything is positive.”

A son of Deputy Minister, Awesome Again won the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and is the sire of 11 Grade 1 winners, including four Breeders’ Cup winners.

His yearlings have averaged $208,000 so far this year, with a top price of $1,350,000 for a colt out of Legs Lawlor. He stood for $50,000 in 2011.
