Avonbridge to stand in Wales for breeder Deer

AVONBRIDGE, sire of this season's Gimcrack Stakes winner Blaine, will stand at his owner-breeder John Deer's Oakgrove Stud in Chepstow from next season.

The move comes after Deer bought out the share in Avonbridge held by Chris Harper, owner of the stallion's previous home, Whitsbury Manor Stud.

A stallion unit is in the process of being built at Oakgrove Stud, which has expanded recently with the purchase of an adjoining 260-acre farm.

Deer formerly stood Avonbridge's sire Averti at Fawley House Stud in Oxfordshire.

Oakgrove Stud manager Tim Lane said: "Avonbridge has sired lots of winners and Blaine has shown he gets some very good horses - as a big horse who won a Group 2 on only his second start Blaine is sure to improve.

"We will do our best by breeders who send him mares and offer them good deals. We will also continue to support the stallion ourselves with some good mares. There are a few promising horses by him who haven't run, so there's plenty to look forward to."

Avonbridge was trained by Roger Charlton to win seven races. He signed off his career by emulating his half-brother Patavellian with victory in the Prix de l'Abbaye, having earlier won the Palace House Stakes.

He is the sire of eight black-type performers including Mill Reef Stakes scorer Temple Meads and Group 3-winning sprinter Iver Bridge Lad.

Lane added: "Avonbridge holds massive sentimental value for the boss as he is Deer-bred through and through. The family is still active and plenty of his relatives are producing winners."

Avonbridge's fee for 2013 will be announced later this year.
