First winners for
trio of sires

AVONBRIDGE, Rakti and Whipper enjoyed their first winners within ten minutes of each other on Monday afternoon when Avon River, Maidtorun and Atasari broketheir maidens.

The Avonbridge colt Avon River had evidently learned from his debut at Bath last week to dictate affairs before drawing away to score by two-and-a-quarter lengths for Richard Hannon in the 5f maiden at Kempton.

Purchased for £21,000 by Peter Doyle at the DBS St Leger Sale, the chestnut colt was bred by Poulton Stud and is the first foal out of Night Kiss, a dual-winning daughter of Night Shift.

He is one of 100 two-year-olds to run for the Whitsbury Manor Stud resident, who emulated his half-brother Patavellian with victory in the Prix de l'Abbaye during his four-season career. The son of Averti is standing this season for £3,500.

It was notso easy for Rakti's daughter Maidtorun in the 5f maiden at Beverley as the Richard Fahey-trained filly had to call on all her reserves to overhaul The Hermitage by a head.

She becomes the third winner from as many runners out of the Woodborough mare Bayletta, who is a half-sister to 1992 2,000 Guineas runner-up Lucky Lindy. She was knocked down for 11,000gns to Gill Richardson at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale.

Multiple Group 1 winner Rakti is represented by 51 foals in his first crop and is available this season for €3,000 at the Irish National Stud.

At the Curragh, the Jim Bolger-owned and trained Atasari showed the benefit of her debut three weeks ago to take the 6f opener despite looking beaten a furlong out.

One of 101 two-year-olds to run for the Group 1-winning miler Whipper this season, Atasari is the fifth winner out of Azra, a daughter of Danehill who ran third in the 1996 National Stakes.

Whipper stands at Ballylinch Stud where his fee is on application.
