Average improves at Barretts January Mixed
SCI Fi Kin, the dam of 2010 Grade 2 El Encino Stakes winner Pretty Unusual, was the star turn of the Barretts JanuaryMixed Sale in California on Monday, selling for $60,000 to California breeder Ron Stolich.
The winning 13-year-old daughter of Siphon, who is out of Grade 2 winner Akinemod, is in foal to leading Californian sireUnusual Heat and thus carrying a full sibling to Pretty Unusual. She was consigned by Harris Farms as agent for Madeline Auerbach.
The one-day sale saw Barretts sell 162 horses for a total of $982,500 and average of $6,065. Although the aggregate fell by 28 per cent from 2011, the average improved, rising by 14 per cent. The clearance rate was 67 per cent.
Unusual Heat also featured in the background of the day's dearest broodmare prospect, Miss Nicole, who was sold to Michael Riordan for $30,000. The unraced four-year-old daughter of Street Cry, who was sold as a supplementary entry by Sam Hendricks, is out of a half-sister to Unusual Heat.
The highest-priced colt of the day was an unnamed two-year-old son of Awesome Gambler sold to trainer Doug O'Neill for $40,000. Consigned by Loveacres Ranch, the colt is a half-brother to five winners and out of the stakes-placed Ascot Knight mare Rachel's Edition.
